One model per chat is an arbitrary limit
Most chat tools make you choose a model when you open a conversation, and then that's the model for the whole thread. But a single conversation often moves through different jobs — brainstorming, then drafting, then fact-checking, then tightening — and no one model is best at all of them.
The limit isn't technical. It's just how most tools were built: one thread, one model. So people either settle for a model that's merely okay at everything, or copy the conversation into another tool to change engines — and lose the thread doing it.
What changes when you can switch
- Brainstorm on a model that's strong at ideas, then hand the draft to one that's strong at prose.
- Get a second model to check the first one's claims, in the same thread, with the same context.
- Use a fast, cheap model for the back-and-forth and a heavier one only for the hard step.
The key is that the conversation carries over — the new model picks up mid-thread instead of starting cold.
