Is the Gemini API key free? What you get, and the catch
A Gemini API key costs nothing, and Google runs a real free tier. The catch is what happens to what you send it. Checked against Google's own pages.
Is the Gemini API key free?
Yes. Creating a key in Google AI Studio costs nothing, and the Gemini API has a free tier for developers and small projects. You can build and test on it without paying. You pay only when you move a project onto a paid tier, and then Google bills you for what you use. Everything here was checked against Google's own documentation on 28 September 2026, and Google changes these details often.
Do you need a credit card to get a Gemini API key?
Google's instructions do not include a payment step. Sign in to Google AI Studio, accept the terms, and it creates a default project and key for you. A payment method only comes in when you choose to set up billing.
Which Gemini models are free?
When we checked, the free tier covered most of the Flash and Flash-Lite models and Gemini 2.5 Pro, for both input and output. The newest Pro preview, and the image, video (Veo) and music models, were paid only. The list changes as Google releases models, so check the pricing page before you plan around a specific one.
What are the Gemini free tier rate limits?
Google no longer publishes one fixed table. It shows your active limits in AI Studio, applies them per project rather than per key, and says the limits are not guaranteed and actual capacity may vary. In practice, the free tier is fine for testing and light use, and you will hit its ceiling if you run a tool all day.
What is the catch with the free tier?
Your data. Google's pricing page says free-tier content is used to improve its products, and its terms say human reviewers may read and annotate free-tier inputs and outputs, after disconnecting them from your account. On the paid tier, prompts and responses are not used to improve products and are kept only for a limited time to detect abuse. Do not send customer details, contracts or anything confidential through the free tier.
Can you use the Gemini free tier in the UK or EU?
Google's terms say that if you make an app available to users in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the UK, you may only use the paid services. If your business serves people there, plan on the paid tier.
How do you switch the Gemini API to paid?
In AI Studio, open your keys or projects and choose to set up billing, then add your details and a payment method. You can prepay, with a $5 minimum, or be billed after use if your account is eligible. Google Cloud free-trial credit cannot be spent on the Gemini API. The first paid tier starts with a $250 spending cap, which rises as your account builds a payment history.
