Does your AI subscription include API access? ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity
You pay $20 a month for an AI chat app, then a tool asks for an API key. Here is, provider by provider, what your subscription does and does not cover.
Does your AI subscription include API access?
Mostly no. A chat subscription pays for the chat app. An API key pays for software, like an automation or a tool such as BizWax.Ai, to use the same models on your behalf, and every major provider bills that separately. The one partial exception is Google, which gives its paid subscribers monthly cloud credit that can go toward the Gemini API. Here is each provider, as their own pages described it on 29 September 2026.
- ChatGPT Plus: no API access. Billed separately by OpenAI.
- Claude Pro or Max: no API access. Billed separately by Anthropic.
- Google AI Pro: not directly, but it comes with $10 a month of Google Cloud credit that can be spent on the Gemini API once billing is set up.
- SuperGrok: no API access. Billed separately by xAI.
- Perplexity Pro: it used to include a small monthly API credit; several reports say that ended in early 2026. Check before relying on it.
Does ChatGPT Plus include API access?
No. OpenAI runs ChatGPT and its API platform as separate products with separate billing, so a ChatGPT Plus subscription includes no API credit. To use the API you add prepaid credit on the OpenAI platform and create a key there.
Does Claude Pro or Max include the Claude API?
No. Anthropic says plainly that a paid Claude subscription enhances the chat experience but does not include access to the Claude API or Console. API usage is paid for with credits in the Claude Console, at platform.claude.com.
Does Google AI Pro include the Gemini API?
Not directly. Google says its AI plan benefits for developers apply inside the Google AI Studio website, and that direct use of the Gemini API with an API key is billed and managed separately. But Google AI Pro subscribers can receive $10 a month in Google Cloud credit, and Google AI Ultra subscribers $100, through the Google Developer Program. That credit can pay for the Gemini API once Cloud Billing is set up, and for prepaid billing Google requires a paid balance above zero before the credit applies. The Gemini API also has a free tier of its own.
Does SuperGrok include the xAI API?
No. xAI bills the API separately from SuperGrok. You load prepaid credit in the xAI console at console.x.ai, with a $5 minimum top-up, and xAI says API credits are non-refundable, so start small.
Does Perplexity Pro include API credits?
Perplexity Pro used to include a $5 monthly API credit. Several reports say Perplexity removed it in early 2026, and developers who relied on it reported their requests failing, while some older Perplexity help pages have still described the perk. Perplexity's API documentation describes credit bought in advance. Before counting on free credit, open the billing page of the Perplexity API console and see what is actually there.
Subscription or API: which is cheaper for a small business?
They pay for different things, so the question is usually both, not either. A subscription is a flat monthly price for one person using the chat app, and it suits someone who is in it all day. The API is paid by what you use, so light or occasional use often costs less than a subscription, heavy automated use can cost more, and it is the only way to let other software use the models for you. To compare, look up your provider's price per million tokens, estimate how much you run in a month, and set a spending limit in the provider's console so the answer can never surprise you.
