Got a new business idea? Run it through the MOAT framework first

A new idea is exciting, which is exactly when you are worst at judging it. The MOAT framework gives you a way to score it before you spend a dollar.

The moment you are least able to judge your idea

A new business idea arrives with a jolt of excitement, and that excitement is the problem. It is precisely when you are least able to see the idea clearly, because you already want it to work. What you need at that moment is not more enthusiasm. It is a cold checklist that does not care how you feel about it.

The MOAT framework

The cleanest one we have found comes from Codie Sanchez, who built a career buying boring, cash-flowing businesses. Her MOAT framework scores an idea on four things:

  • Margin: does one sale actually make money after the real cost of delivering it?
  • Operations: can it be run and delivered without you doing everything, as it grows?
  • Advantage: is there anything that stops a competitor copying it and winning on price?
  • TAM, total addressable market: are there enough real buyers to build a business on?

Score each out of ten. As a rough line, a total above 30 out of 40 is a business worth pursuing. The value is not the number itself, it is that scoring each part separately forces you to look at the dimension you have been quietly avoiding.

The hard part is scoring it honestly

The catch is the same one you started with: it is your idea, so you will grade your own margin generously and explain away the weak spot. A framework only helps if you fill it in honestly, and honesty about your own idea is the rarest thing in the room.

This is exactly what the MOAT Evaluator on Bizwax is for. Describe the idea in a paragraph and it scores it across all four dimensions, but instead of one opinion it runs the evaluation past a panel of AI models at once, so you see where they agree and where they split. It returns a blunt FUND IT, FIX IT or FLEE IT verdict and flags the weak dimension rather than averaging it into a comfortable number.

It is one tool in a single Bizwax subscription. Once the idea holds up, the same plan turns 'everyone' into a real target market with the Target Market Assessor and pressure-tests the next hard call with AI Consensus, for one price. Do the cheap, honest thinking first, and keep your money for the bets only you can make.
